Newcastle United History
- November, 1881 - the Stanley Cricket Club of South Byker decided to form an association football club. The first match was against Elswick Leather Works 2nd XI. The team won 5-0.
- October, 1882 - the club changed its name to East End FC. Then East End FC united with Rosewood FC.
- 1889 - the club turned professional.
- December 22, 1892 - West End stopped its existence, some of the players joined East End FC. East End FC was reorganized and became Newcastle United.
- 1893 - the club joined the Football League.
- September 6, 1895 - Newcastle United Football Club Co. Ltd. was constituted.
- 1908 - the team included such players as: Colin Veitch, Jackie Rutherford, Jimmy Lawrence and Albert Shepherd, Bill McCracken, Jimmy Howie, Peter McWilliam and Andy Aitken. Nevertheless the team were defeated 9-1 to Sunderland. It was a record home loss.
- 1914 - by this year the club won three league titles (1904-05, 1906-07,1908-09) and an FA Cup.
- 1924 - after World War I the Toon defeated Aston Villa and won the FA Cup. Hughie Gallacher was signed.
- 1926 - 1927 - the club became the First Division champions. Neil Harris, Stan Seymour and Frank Hudspeth joined the team.
- 1932 - the club was relegated for the first time in their history, but at the same season Newcastle Utd beat Liverpool 9-2 and Everton 7-3.
- 1939 - Stan Seymour was appointed as manager. He enriched the club with such players as: Jackie Milburn, Bobby Cowell and Ernie Taylor, George Robledo, Bobby Mitchell, Joe Harvey, Len Shackleton and Frank Brennan.
- 1946 - after the World War II the club spent several seasons in Division Two. The record victory in English League Football history was the game against Newport County. As the result Newcastle United won 13-0.
- 1948 - the Magpies got promotion to the First Division.
- 1951 - Blackpool were defeated and the Toon won the FA Cup.
- 1952 - the FA Cup success was achieved again: Newcastle United beat Arsenal 2-0.
- 1955 - the 6th FA Cup title. The team defeated Manchester City 3-1.
- 1961 - Norman Smith took over a post of manager.
- 1965 - the club became the Second Division Champions.
- 1968 - the Toon won European Fairs Cup. In the following years such players as: Jimmy Smith, Tony Green, Malcolm Macdonald and Terry Hibbitt joined the club.
- 1980 - Newcastle Utd were relegated to the Second Division. Arthur Cox became a new manager.
- 1982 - due to the Arthur Cox the club returned to the First Division. Kevin Keegan was signed.
- 1984 - Jack Charlton was appointed manager. The talented player Paul Gascoigne or "Gazza" joined the club but than was sold to Tottenham as well as Waddle.
- 1989 - the team rolled down to the Second Division again. Such new managers as Jim Smith and Ossie Ardiles could not stop this situation.
- 1992 - Sir John Hall (as chairman) and Kevin Keegan (as manager)joined the club and improved its position. St James Park was redeveloped into a semi-world-class stadium. Keegan brought in new well-qualified players: Andy Cole, David Kelly, Paul Bracewell, Ruel Fox, Gavin Peacock, Rob Lee and Brian 'Killer' Kilcline.
- 1992 -1993 - the team became the First Division champions and got promotion to the Premier League.
- 1993 -1994 - Sir John Hall wanted to make a perfect squad and brought in such players as: David Ginola, Faustino Asprilla, Peter Beardsley, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer.
- 1997 - Newcastle United won a game against Tottenham Hotspur 7-1. Keegan resigned.
- 1997 - Kenny Dalglish took over a post of manager. Under his guidance Newcastle entered the Champions League. They also reached the FA Cup final but lost to Arsenal.
- 1998 - 1999 -after poor results of the season, Dalglish was sacked. Ruud Gullit appointed as manager. The club reached the FA Cup again, but this tame lost the game to Manchester United. His signings (Marcelino and forward Silvio Maric ) were not successful.
- 1999 - 2000 - the club was defeated by Sunderland and Ruud Gullit was replaced with Sir Bobby Robson. The team reached an Inter-Toto Cup final against Troyes AC. unfortunately they were beaten after a 4-4 draw at home.
- 2002 - 2003 - the Toon achieved qualification for the Champions' League. at the beginning of the season the club lost three matches in a row, but then they defeated Juventus 1-0 at St James' Park. The club beating Dinamo Kiev 2-1, Feyenoord 3-2. When Juventus defeated Dinamo Kiev at home match, Newcastle FC progressed to the second round.
- 2003 - 2004 - the club defeated NAC Breda, FC Basel, Vålerenga, Mallorca, PSV and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup, but then were beaten by Olympique Marseille 2-0 on aggregate. At the end they finished in the 5th position.
- 2004 - Sir Bobby Robson was dismissed and Graeme Souness was brought in.
- April, 2005 - the Magpies defeated Sporting Lisbon and won the home leg of their UEFA cup Quarter final.
- August, 2005 - the club lost to Deportivo La Coruna 4-2 and failed to have an opportunity to take part in European competition for the 2005/06 season. Michael Owen was signed for a fee of £17 million.
- February, 2006 - Glen Roeder became a new manager. Under his guidance the team finished in 7th place. It was a real gap for the club. Then the club's force was substantially weakened after a series of injuries.
- 2007 - Sam Allardyce took over as manager.
